Graduate student Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.) and redshirt-sophomore John Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) combined to go 7-for-11 with five extra-base hits and five RBI, while junior Jake Walkinshaw (Seymour, Conn.) and junior Mitchell Powers (Portland, Maine) turned in stellar pitching performances, as the 11th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team earned a sweep of Bloomfield College on Saturday to open its five-game trip to Florida. SNHU edged the Bears in the first game, 4-3, before breezing to an 8-1 win in game two.
Goldstein was 4-for-5 with two walks, three RBI and two runs scored, while Stanton went 3-for-6 with a pair of walks, two RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore Kyle Ruth (Albany, N.Y.) knocked in three runs, while junior Kyle Pangallo (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) drove in two.
In the first game, Southern New Hampshire seized a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning as junior Caleb Potter (Mentor, Ohio) drew a leadoff walk and scored on a triple from Stanton, before Ruth plated Stanton with an RBI double.
The Bears claimed one run back against Walkinshaw in the home half of the second on a Billy Sabo single that scored Ben Thomas, who began the two-out rally with a base hit.
Bloomfield tied it in the fourth on back-to-back doubles from Christopher Cabral and Jonathan Carratala before SNHU went back in front, 3-2, in the fifth on Stanton's RBI double that brought in Potter, who singled earlier in the frame.
Bloomfield again evened the score in the bottom of the stanza as a pair of singles and a two-out error pushed a run across.
Southern New Hampshire would plate the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh as a pair of errors and an intentional walk to Stanton loaded the bases with one out before Ruth lifted a sacrifice fly to left that scored senior Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.) and made it 4-3.
Walkinshaw set the Bears down in order in the seventh to end it.
Walkinshaw (3-0) allowed three runs – two earned – on seven hits, while striking out four and walking a pair in the complete-game, seven-inning effort.
Stanton was 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored, while Potter (two walks, two runs) and Goldstein (walk) both finished 1-for-2. Ruth went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
In game two, Southern New Hampshire again jumped out to a 2-0 lead – this time in the bottom of the first. Goldstein led off the frame and scored on a double by Pangallo, who then came around to score on Bauer's sac fly to right.
SNHU nudged the lead to 3-0 in the third when junior Sean Webster (Boston, Mass.) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on Goldstein's RBI double.
Bloomfield made it on the bard in the fifth on a run-scoring groundout from Azmir Garcia before the Penmen hung a three-spot in the bottom half to make it 6-1. A base knock from sophomore Joshua Zbierski (Stafford Springs, Conn.) and a double by redshirt-junior Taylor Olmstead (Greenwich, Conn.) put a pair in scoring position before Goldstein brought both home with a triple. Goldstein later scored to cap the scoring in the inning on a Pangallo sac fly.
The Penmen extended the lead to 7-1 in the sixth as Stanton drew a leadoff walk, swiped second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Ruth's grounder to short. SNHU closed the scoring in the eighth on a pinch-hit single by freshman Tom Blandini (Bow, N.H.) that scored Stanton, who led off with a triple.
Powers (1-1) turned in his best performance of the season as he worked eight strong innings, allowing one run on just three hits, while punching out eight and not issuing a single walk. Redshirt-freshman Brendan Welch (Easton, Mass.) struck on the first batter he faced in the ninth, while freshman Zachary Merchant (Lunenburg, Mass.) retired the final two batters, including one via the K.
Goldstein was 3-for-3 with a walk, three RBI and two runs scored. Olmstead finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Stanton (walk, two runs), Pangallo (two RBI, run), Zbierski (run) and redshirt-junior Ryan Sullivan (Hopkinton, Mass.; walk) were all 1-for-3.
Notes:
- Stanton extended his hitting streak to five straight.
- The complete game for Walkinshaw was his second straight and the second of his career.
