Junior Caleb Potter (Mentor, Ohio) went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to lead the 11th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team to a 6-3 win against Caldwell University on Sunday at the Santaluces Athletic Complex.
Caldwell leapt out to a 2-0 lead in the second against senior starter Alex Person (Foxboro, Mass.) on Rob DeSanti's two-run single.
Southern New Hampshire sliced its deficit in half in the third as graduate student Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch, scampered to second on a wild pitch and scored when junior Kyle Pangallo (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) reached on an error by the third baseman.
SNHU would tie it in the following inning as Potter hammered a one-out solo shot to level the score at 2-2.
Caldwell would go in front, 3-2, in the fifth inning as Ryan Rivera led off with a double and scored as Michael Bernstein followed with an RBI single.
The Penmen would again pull even in the home half of the frame as Pangallo led off with a single, stole second and scored on an RBI base knock from senior Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.).
Southern New Hampshire grabbed its first lead of the game in the seventh when redshirt-junior Ryan Sullivan (Hopkinton, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a Bauer base hit, advanced to third when junior Sean Webster (Boston, Mass.) walked to load the bases and came home on Potter's RBI single. Sophomore Kyle Ruth (Albany, N.Y.) followed with a sacrifice fly that added some insurance and made it 5-3.
SNHU nudged the advantage to 6-3 in the eighth when Pangallo drew a two-out walk, stole second and kept running all the way home on an overthrow by the catcher.
Redshirt-freshman Brendan Welch (Easton, Mass.), who nailed down the final out of the eighth inning, recorded the first two outs of the ninth, but left with a pair on. Freshman Nick Artymowicz (Seaville, N.Y.) entered and induced a groundout to seal the victory.
Person (2-0) turned in a quality start as he allowed three runs on eight hits, while striking out five and walking three, over seven-and-two-thirds innings. Welch allowed one hit and struck out three in one inning of scoreless work. Artymowicz retired the only batter he faced for his second save.
Bauer (RBI, run) and Pangallo (walk, two runs) were both 2-for-4 as they joined Potter in the multiple-hit club.
Notes:
- Since losing back-to-back games for the first time in nearly two years, SNHU has won five-in-a-row.
- Person improves to 23-2 over his four-year career with the Penmen.
- The home run for Potter was his first in a Southern New Hampshire uniform.
- Stanton, who left the game after one at bat, had his five-game hitting streak snapped.
