Senior Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.) went 4-for-7, homered and drove in five runs, while junior Jake Walkinshaw (Seymour, Conn.) and senior Alex Person (Foxboro, Mass.) turned in complete games on the mound, as the sixth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team bounced back to sweep a doubleheader from Shippensburg University on Sunday in the finale of a four-game set at Fairchild Field. Then Penmen won the first game, 9-3, in seven innings and then secured a 6-1 victory in game two.
Bauer also walked twice and scored three times, while putting together a slash line of .571/.667/1.286/1.953 on the day. Graduate student Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.) was 3-for-7 with a pair of walks, an RBI and three runs scored, while redshirt-junior Ryan Sullivan (Hopkinton, Mass.) was 3-for-8 with four RBI and a run scored. Junior Kyle Pangallo (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three runs) and redshirt-sophomore John Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.; two runs) were also each 3-for-8.
With the game scoreless in the top of the third and the bases empty for Southern New Hampshire with two outs, Pangallo drew a walk and Sullivan was hit by a pitch before Bauer crushed a three-run bomb to right-center for some instant offense. SNHU made it 4-0 in the fourth when Stanton led off with a single to right, swiped second and came around to score on a base hit to left from senior Cam Oliveira (Tewksbury, Mass.).
Doubles in the fifth from Pangallo and Bauer brought in run No. 5 before Stanton hit an infield single to third and Bauer scored on an error to push the lead to 6-0.
Shippensburg slashed its deficit in half with a three-run bottom of the fifth on run-scoring singles from Grant Hoover and Ryan McMillen, as well as an RBI fielder's choice by Nick Spangler.
Sullivan's two-run double in the sixth and hustle in the seventh from Bauer, who led off with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a groundout and scored on a throw down to first following a strikeout, capped the scoring.
Walkinshaw (2-0) allowed three runs on seven hits, while striking out five and walking just one, in seven innings.
Bauer was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, four RBI and three runs scored, while Pangallo (walk, two runs) and Stanton (walk, run) were both 2-for-3. Sullivan (two RBI, run) and Oliveira (run, RBI) were 1-for-3.
In the second game, the Penmen drew first blood in the top of the first when Goldstein led off the game with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Sullivan's single to center.
An error and Goldstein's run-scoring knock to right-center made it 3-0 in the second, while a sacrifice fly to right from redshirt-junior Taylor Olmstead (Greenwich, Conn.) in the fourth to score sophomore Joshua Zbierski (Stafford Springs, Conn.), who led off with a single, nudged the advantage to 4-0.
RBI singles in the seventh from Sullivan and Bauer widened the gap to 6-0 before Cash Gladfelter's RBI double to left finally put Shippensburg on the board in the eighth.
Person (1-0) worked all nine innings, scattering five hits, giving up one run and fanning six, while not issuing a walk.
Goldstein went 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs and an RBI, while Sullivan (two RBI) and Bauer (RBI) were both 2-for-5.
Notes:
- Bauer's home run was his third of the season and his second in as many days.
- The complete game for Walkinshaw was the first of his career, while it marked the second for Person.
