Senior Alex Person (Foxboro, Mass.) spun a complete-game gem in game one and redshirt-sophomore Kevin Alexy (Newton, Mass.) delivered a game-winning, two-run double in the 11th inning of the night cap as the seventh-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team took two from Saint Anselm College on Sunday evening and into Monday morning at Trinity College's Murren Family Field/DiBenedetto Stadium. The Penmen posted a 2-1 victory in game one and then rallied for an 11-inning 5-4 triumph in the second game, finishing just before 2 a.m.
Graduate student Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.) went 4-for-10 with a run scored, redshirt-sophomore John Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) was 3-for-10 with a run and redshirt-junior Ryan Sullivan (Hopkinton, Mass.) finished 2-for-7 with a pair of RBI.
Southern New Hampshire scored first in game one in the bottom of the third when Goldstein stroked a two-out single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI base knock from Stanton.
Saint Anselm tied it in the fourth as Dan Bodi drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a John Marculitis single and scored an unearned run on an error later in the frame.
The Penmen grabbed the lead for good in the sixth when senior Cam Oliveira (Tewksbury, Mass.) drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Stanton, who began the inning by reaching on an error before stealing second and moving to third on a walk to sophomore Robert Fulkerson (Anaheim, Calif.) after senior Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.) was hit by a pitch.
Person took over from there, retiring the next nine he faced to slam the door. Person set down the final 16 batters he faced after allowing his unearned run in the fourth.
Person (4-0) went the distance as he allowed the one unearned run on three hits, while striking out seven and walking three, over nine innings.
Joseph Levasseur pitched well for Saint Anselm, giving up two runs – one earned – on five hits, while fanning nine and walking three, in eight innings of work.
Goldstein was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Stanton finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Oliveira (RBI) and Fulkerson were both 1-for-2 with a walk.
Saint Anselm jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning against junior starter Ivon Clough (Dublin, N.H.). Singles from Matthew Flynn and Aaron Crandall began the inning before a Max Wadington walk loaded the bases with no one out. Marculitis drove in the first run with a sac fly to right before a two-out, two-run triple from Connor Parent made it 3-0.
The score stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth when junior Caleb Potter (Mentor, Ohio) led off with a single and Bauer followed with a double to put two in scoring position for Sullivan, who lifted a sac fly to center that put the Penmen on the board. Sophomore Joshua Zbierski (Stafford Springs, Conn.) then grounded out to second to plate Bauer and slice the deficit to 3-2.
SNHU would pull even in the eighth as Potter again started the rally – this time with a leadoff walk – then went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout to second before scoring on an RBI single from Sullivan. The Penmen would load the bases with two outs, but the Hawks' bullpen would escape without further damage.
Graduate student Stephen Fortuna (Metuchen, N.J.), who hurled a perfect eighth, set Saint Anselm down in order in the ninth and 10th, before giving way to redshirt-freshman Brendan Welch (Easton, Mass.) for the 11th. Saint Anselm would quickly push a run across as Jason Turner doubled before a Flynn RBI single made it 4-3.
After two quick outs in the home half, it was again Potter starting the engine with a single before Bauer extended the inning with a walk. Alexy then came to the plate as a pinch hitter and dumped a ball into shallow left field that took a wild hop off the turf and allowed both runners to come around to score as Bauer slid in with the game-winning run as the throw met him at the plate.
Clough was charged with three runs on three hits, while striking out one and walking a batter in two-thirds of an inning. The Penmen bullpen came up aces, starting with redshirt-junior Andrew Lalonde (Bedford, N.H.), who fired five-and-a-third no-hit innings, punching out seven and walking just two. Freshman Nick Artymowicz (Seaville, N.J.) struck out two and allowed a hit in a scoreless inning of work, while Fortuna posted three perfect frames. Welch (2-0) relinquished one run on two hits, while fanning a pair, in one inning.
Sullivan was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Potter (walk, three runs) and Zbierski (RBI) both went 2-for-5. Goldstein and Stanton were each 2-for-6, with Bauer going 1-for-4 with two walks and a pair of runs scored.
