Redshirt-junior Ryan Sullivan (Hopkinton, Mass.) and redshirt-sophomore John Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) each drove in three runs to lead the fifth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team to a 14-4 victory against Assumption College on Sunday at Rocheleau Field as the Penmen finished off a series sweep of the Greyhounds.
Southern New Hampshire manufactured a run in the top of the first as graduate student Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.) led off the game by being hit with a pitch, stole second and moved to third on a fly out to right from freshman Tom Blandini (Bow, N.H.) before scoring on a groundout to the right side by senior Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.).
SNHU doubled its lead in the top of the second as back-to-back singles from sophomore Joshua Zbierski (Stafford Springs, Conn.) and freshman Jake Coro (Johnston, R.I.) put runners on the corners with one out when Coro swiped second and Zbierski scored on the catcher's throw. Two batters later, Goldstein stroked a two-out RBI double down the left field line to make it 3-0.
The Penmen then struck for three more in the third. Junior Caleb Potter (Mentor, Ohio) followed a leadoff walk from Sullivan with a single to center and then stole second to put a pair in scoring position for Stanton, who doubled to the gap in left-center to bring in both runs. After Stanton swiped third, Zbierski reached on a fielder's choice and Stanton came home on the throw to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Southern New Hampshire made it 7-0 in the fifth as Stanton walked and then stole both second and third with two outs before Coro walked and swiped second, as Stanton scored on another errant throw.
Alex Richardson's RBI double to left-center off junior starter Ivon Clough (Dublin, N.H.) in the home half put Assumption on the board, but SNHU grabbed the run back in the sixth as Sullivan walked, stole second and scored on a pinch-hit double to right-center from freshman Ethan Harris (Middleton, Mass.). Harris then scored when Stanton reached on an error to put the Penmen up, 9-1.
Sullivan's two-out, two-run single to left-center in the seventh made it 11-1 as it plated Goldstein and junior Kyle Pangallo (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), who had both walked.
Assumption put two more on the board in the bottom of the seventh, but SNHU again answered – this time with a three-run eighth. Two-out RBI singles from Bauer and Sullivan, as well as a bases-loaded walk from Harris made it 14-3. Derek Adamson's run-scoring double to left-center capped the scoring in the ninth.
Clough (5-0) allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out eight and not walking a batter, over seven innings. Sophomore Hayden Manning (Portland, Conn.) walked one in a hitless eighth, while redshirt-freshman Shane Reardon (Kinnelon, N.J.) gave up one run on two hits, striking out one in the ninth.
Sullivan finished 2-for-4 with two walks, three RBI and two runs scored, while Stanton was 1-for-5 with a walk, three RBI and a pair of runs. Goldstein (two walks, RBI, three runs) and Potter (run) were each 1-for-3. Coro was 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored, with Bauer (walk, two RBI) and Zbierski (RBI, run) also turning in 1-for-5 days.
