BOX SCORE

When and Where: April 5, 2017 – Rindge, N.H. (Pappas Field)
Score:
Southern New Hampshire University 1, Franklin Pierce University 0
Records: SNHU 18-5 (6-1 NE10, 4-1 NE10 NE), FPU 13-8 (5-2 NE10, 4-1 NE10 NE)

Junior Mitchell Powers (Portland, Maine) fired a complete-game, five-hit shutout to lead the seventh-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team to Wednesday's 1-0 victory against in-state rival Franklin Pierce University at Pappas Field.

Southern New Hampshire jumped on the board in the top of the first inning against Mike Lundin as graduate student Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.) led off the game with a double that skipped over the third-base bag and rolled down the left field line. Junior Kyle Pangallo (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) then sacrificed Goldstein to third before redshirt-sophomore John Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) plated him with a groundout to second that made it 1-0.

The score would stay that way for the next eight-and-a-half innings as both pitchers were locked in and received some helped from their defense. The Ravens put two on in the bottom of the first, but Powers was able to get out of it with an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.

The Penmen pushed Goldstein to third in the third, but could not drive him in. Franklin Pierce then nearly tied it in the home half as Harrison Smoske reached on a throwing error, was sacrificed to second and then attempted to score on John Friday's single to right-center, but was cut down at the plate by an on-the-money throw from Stanton.

Both teams then put two on in the sixth, but could not score. SNHU loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Franklin Pierce escaped when a line drive to left-center by senior Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.) was caught.

Powers, who did not allow a hit after the fifth inning, then buckled down, retiring the final 11 he faced to secure the win.

Powers (2-2) tossed nine shutout innings, scattering five hits, while striking out eight and walking just two.

Lundin allowed one run on one hit over five-plus innings, while fanning five and walking a pair.

Goldstein (two walks, run) and Stanton (walk, RBI) were both 1-for-3, while senior Cam Oliveira (Tewksbury, Mass.) was 1-for-4.

Notes:
- SNHU has now won 15 of its last 17, including seven of eight and four straight.
- The last time the Penmen had blanked Franklin Pierce was March 24, 2009 in a 2-0 victory in Rindge.
- Powers is the first pitcher to single-handedly shut out the Ravens since Saint Thomas Aquinas College's Matt Kostalos limited them to six hits in a complete-game shutout on May 14, 2015 at Pappas.
- Powers records his second straight complete game after going eight innings in a 3-2 loss to Stonehill on March 26.
- Powers matches the longest outing of his career after pitching nine innings of relief in a 10-4 win against Saint Thomas Aquinas on May 22 of last season in the NCAA East Regional at Franklin Pierce.
- The previous longest scoreless performance of Powers' career was seven innings in a 1-0 loss to Saint Thomas Aquinas on March 18 of this season.
