Senior Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.) homered and drove in five runs, while senior Alex Person (Foxboro, Mass.) and redshirt-junior Jake Stearns (Plymouth, Mass.) each turned in solid starts, to lead the seventh-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team to a huge sweep of Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday at the Ballpark at SCSU. SNHU won the first game, 9-6, before using a pair of late runs to claim a 3-1 victory in game two.

Bauer was 4-for-8 with a walk and a run scored in the doubleheader. Junior Kyle Pangallo (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) went 2-for-5 with a walk and three runs scored, while redshirt-sophomore John Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) was 3-for-8 with a pair of runs.

Southern New Hampshire struck for a quick two in the bottom of the first inning in game one. Graduate student Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.) led off with a walk, went to third on a Stanton single and scored on Bauer's RBI base knock. Stanton then stole third and scored on a groundout from redshirt-junior Ryan Sullivan (Hopkinton, Mass.) that made it 2-0.

Goldstein nudged the lead to 3-0 in the second with an RBI single that scored Pangallo, who walked and swiped second.

SNHU added two more in the third to extend the lead to 5-0. Stanton led off with a single, went to third on Sullivan's base hit and scored when Sullivan stole second and the throw sailed into the outfield. Senior Cam Oliveira (Tewksbury, Mass.) then plated Sullivan with an RBI single.

Southern Connecticut began to mount a comeback in the fourth on Greg Zullo's RBI single. The Owls made it a two-run game at 5-3 in the fifth on Jim Palmer's RBI groundout and Nick Lambert's sacrifice fly to right.

Southern New Hampshire again made it a five-run game in the sixth as Bauer smashed a three-run home run that stretched the advantage to 8-3.

The Owls pulled within 8-4 on Griffin Gara's RBI double in the top of the seventh before Pangallo was hit by a pitch with two outs in the home half and then scored when junior Sean Webster (Boston, Mass.) reached on an error by the center fielder.

Southern Connecticut tacked on two in the ninth as Palmer's RBI single plated one right and a fielding error brought in a second unearned run.

Person (5-0) allowed four runs – two earned – on three hits, while striking out three and walking five, in seven innings of work. Freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) was charged with two runs – one earned – as he walked two and struck out a batter in one-and-two-thirds hitless innings. Junior Joe DeSarro (Frankfort, N.Y.) did not retire either of the two batters he faced, while redshirt-freshman Brendan Welch (Easton, Mass.) set down the only Owl he pitched against.

Bauer went 3-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored, while Stanton was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs. Goldstein was 1-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Sullivan (walk, RBI, run) and Oliveira (RBI) were each 1-for-4.

It was Southern Connecticut that drew first blood in game two, as Lambert's two-out RBI single made it 1-0 in the third.

Southern New Hampshire would tie it in the fifth when Pangallo doubled, stole second and came home on Webster's RBI base hit.

The Penmen then grabbed the lead in the bottom of the eighth on a run-scoring triple from junior Caleb Potter (Mentor, Ohio) before Bauer's RBI single made it 3-1.

Southern Connecticut had the tying run in scoring position with one out in the ninth when freshman Nick Artymowicz (Seaville, N.J.) entered and punched out back-to-back batters to earn the save.

Stearns (2-0) allowed one run on three hits, while fanning eight and not walking a batter, in seven innings. Welch gave up a hit and struck out a batter in an inning of work. Graduate student Stephen Fortuna (Metuchen, N.J.) tossed a third of an inning, striking out one and walking one, while Artymowicz struck out both batters he faced for his third save of the season.

Pangallo finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Potter was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run. Bauer (walk, RBI), Sullivan (run) and Webster (run) were all 1-for-3.

Notes:
- The games were originally scheduled to take place at Southern New Hampshire, but unplayable field conditions forced the game to be moved to Southern Connecticut, with SNHU still serving as the home team and batting last.
- SNHU has now won 16 of its last 18, including nine of 10 and six straight.
- Bauer's home run was his team-leading fourth of the year.
- Person improves to 26-2 lifetime, including 15-0 over the last two seasons. He is 16-0 in his last 20 starts, dating back to May 15, 2015, as well as 23-1 over his last 29 starts since Feb. 21, 2015.
