Graduate student Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.) went 4-for-10 and drove in two runs, including the game winner in game one, as the seventh-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team split a pair of extra-inning contests with the University of New Haven on Sunday at Penmen Field. SNHU rallied for a 7-6 win in 15 innings in the first game before the Chargers came from behind to steal a 7-3 victory in 10 innings in game two.

Goldstein also walked three times and scored a pair of runs, while redshirt-junior Ryan Sullivan (Hopkinton, Mass.) went 4-for-11 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored. Junior Sean Webster (Boston, Mass.) was 3-for-9 with a walk and a run.

New Haven scored game one's first run in the top of the second as Jack Zagaja led off with a double to center, was sacrificed to third and scored on Andrew Garcia's groundout to short. New Haven kept the inning going against junior starter Ivon Clough (Dublin, N.H.) as PJ Contreras reached on a throwing error, which enabled him to scamper to second. Matt Chamberlain then came through with a single to left, but junior Caleb Potter (Mentor, Ohio) threw a strike to the plate to toss out Contreras by five feet and keep it a 1-0 game.

The Chargers hung a four-spot in the third as they loaded the bases with no one out before the Penmen went to their bullpen and brought in redshirt-sophomore Cameron Scotia (Dudley, Mass.). Nick Perrelli followed by looping a single to left that plated a pair of runs to make it 3-0. Potter nearly had a chance to throw out his second runner in as many innings, but his bid was off the mark and allowed both runners to move up into scoring position. A wild pitch and a groundout to second brought in two more runs and New Haven exited the inning with a 5-0 advantage.

Southern New Hampshire picked up its first hit and run of the contest in the fifth as Sullivan doubled down the left field line and then scored on a two-out double to deep center off the bat of junior Kyle Pangallo (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). A wild pitch moved Pangallo up to third, but he was stranded there.

The Penmen climbed back into it in the sixth as Goldstein led off by lining a single back up the middle before redshirt-sophomore John Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) reached on an error to put a pair in scoring position. Senior Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.) came through with a single to right-center that plated both runs and sliced the SNHU deficit in half at 5-3. After a walk to Potter, Sullivan singled through the left side to score Bauer and make it a 5-4 game. A walk to senior Cam Oliveira (Tewksbury, Mass.) packed the bases, but a 6-4-3 double play allowed New Haven to escape the inning with the lead.

The Chargers looked to add to their advantage in the seventh as they had the bases loaded with one out, but freshman Nick Artymowicz (Seaville, N.J.), who relieved Scotia to begin the frame, snagged a line drive off the bat of Nick Perrelli and doubled-up the runner at third to get out of the inning.

New Haven gained an insurance run in the top of the ninth when a delayed double steal resulted in an error and an unearned run that made it 6-4.

Southern New Hampshire immediately went on the offensive in the bottom of the ninth as Pangallo singled to left and took second on a wild pitch. Webster followed with a swinging bunt and raced down the line, drawing a rushed throw from the New Haven pitcher that sailed over the head of the first baseman and allowed Pangallo to score. Goldstein tied the game with a ball to the gap in left-center that plated Webster to make it 6-6.

The bullpens matched zeroes for the next five innings until the Penmen won it in the 15th. Oliveira led off by driving a base hit through the left side and then went to second when Webster hit a screaming line drive to left that the left fielder could not hang on to. Goldstein followed by sending a ball to the gap in right-center that easily allowed Oliveira to come around and score the winning run.

Graduate student Stephen Fortuna (Metuchen, N.J.) earned the win to improve to 1-0 on the season as he tossed three scoreless frames, allowing just one hit, while striking out three and walking a pair. Junior Mitchell Powers (Portland, Maine) fired three shutout frames before that, relinquishing just a single hit, while punching out eight and not walking a batter. Clough was charged with four runs on five hits and a walk in two-plus innings. Scotia threw four key innings, giving up one run on three hits. Artymowicz allowed one run – unearned – on two hits, while striking out two and walking three, in three innings.

Goldstein was 3-for-6 with two walks, two RBI and a run scored. Webster was 2-for-5 with a walk and a run, while Sullivan and Pangallo were each 3-for-7 with an RBI and a run scored. Bauer finished 2-for-6 with a walk, two RBI and two runs.

Southern New Hampshire seized a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game two when Goldstein drew a leadoff walk, stole second and came home when Bauer reached on a two-out error after a routine grounder to first.

SNHU doubled its lead in the second when Potter led off with a double to right, swiped third and scored on a single up the middle by sophomore Joshua Zbierski (Stafford Springs, Conn.).

New Haven tied it in the sixth against redshirt-junior Andrew Lalonde (Bedford, N.H.) as Chamberlain's two-out, two-run double evened the score at 2-2.

The Penmen went back ahead in the home half as Stanton walked, stole second and came home on Sullivan's two-out single through the left side.

The score stayed that way into the ninth, with the Penmen leaving the bases packed in the eighth after loading them with no one out and striking out three times. New Haven was down to its final out in the ninth when Garcia came on as a pinch hitter against redshirt-freshman Brendan Welch (Easton, Mass.) and belted a game-tying home run to left.

After the Penmen left a pair stranded in the bottom of the ninth, the Chargers struck four times in the 10th. They loaded the bases with no one out when Zagaja lifted a sac fly to right to snap the tie and make it 4-3. A Contreras fielder's choice added an insurance run before Billy Huber's two-out, two-run triple did more damage and gave New Haven some breathing room at 7-3.

SNHU put a pair in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the 10th, but did not score.

Lalonde pitched well as he allowed two runs on three hits, while striking out nine and walking five, in six innings. Freshman Ryan Steffens (Commack, N.Y.) walked and struck out a batter in an inning-and-a-third of hitless baseball. Welch (2-1) suffered the loss as he relinquished five runs on four hits in two-and-a-third innings, while striking out four and walking two. Junior Rob Del Signore (Londonderry, N.H.) retired the only batter he faced.

Potter went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Goldstein (walk, run), Sullivan (walk, RBI) and Webster were all 1-for-4.

Notes:
- SNHU has now won 17 of its last 20, including 10 of 12, but had its seven-game winning streak snapped with the game two defeat.
- Despite playing in the same conference, this was the first time the two teams met in the regular season since April 6, 2013.
- This was the first time Southern New Hampshire played two extra-inning contests in a single doubleheader since March 23, 2014 when it split a pair of 10-inning games at Adelphi University.
- The two games featured 25 total innings that lasted eight hours and four minutes, saw 13 pitching changes and 831 pitches thrown.
- Game one was the longest contest, inning-wise, the Penmen have been involved with since falling at Lynn University, 2-1, in 15 innings March 3, 2014. The four-hour, 27-minute affair was also the longest game at Penmen Field in nearly 10 years since SNHU defeated Stonehill College, 2-1, in an 18-inning marathon April 19, 2007.

Up Next:
The Penmen return to action Wednesday, April 12 (3:30 p.m.) when they take on Saint Michael's College. The next home game for SNHU is Thursday, April 13 (3 p.m.) when it plays host to the University of Bridgeport at Penmen Field.
