Sophomore Jill Couto (Newton Junction, N.H.) registered a top-20 finish on Friday, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's cross country team opened its 2017 slate at the Temple University Invitational at Belmont Plateau Park.
Couto traversed the terrain in 23:54, which was fast enough to check in at No. 15 in a field comprised primarily of Division I student-athletes. The Penmen placed three harriers in the top-25, as freshman Maura Coakley (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and sophomore Madison Brand (Valhalla, N.Y.) were Nos. 22 and 23 in 25:06 and 25:11, respectively.
Graduate student Emily Loughlin (Jaffrey, N.H.) was next across for Southern New Hampshire with an official time of 25:45, and sophomore Jill Dieterich (Commack, N.Y.) rounded out the Penmen top-five in 25:49. Junior Ashley Dennis (Coventry, R.I.) followed with a 26:47 performance, before junior Maddie Bardier (Pembroke, N.H.), classmate Courtney Burrell (Meredith, N.H.) and freshman Maddy Anctil (Amherst, N.H.) completed the SNHU contingent in 28:29, 29:25 and 31:47, respectively.
Notes:
- The race featured 34 runners of which, 24 were NCAA Division I student-athletes.
- Temple University took home the team title with a combined score of 30 points, and the Owls were followed by East Carolina University (44) and Tulane University (52).
- East Carolina's Grace Sullivan captured the individual crown in 22:05.

Southern New Hampshire resumes its schedule next Saturday (Sept. 9) when it travels to Randolph, Vermont for the Vermont Tech Invitational.
