Junior Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal) of the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinal round in the singles main draw following the second day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championships on Saturday at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Morais, who received a bye through qualifying, opened up the main draw with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against the University of the Sciences' Elkanah Linder, before posting a 6-3, 6-4 win against Queens (N.Y.) College's Louisa Brunetti to reach the quarterfinals. There, Morais will take on seventh-seeded Rebecca Fakas of Adelphi University, who, following a first-round bye, barely made it past St. Thomas Aquinas College's Cassandra Rohr, 7-5, 3-6, 10-6.
Junior Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) breezed past Stonehill's Nicole Downey, 6-0, 6-1 in her main-draw opener, but then suffered a 6-2, 6-4 blemish against fourth-seeded #4 Liza Dubrovskaya of Post University, with a trip to the quarterfinals on the line.
In the doubles main draw, Morais and Sala, seeded 13th, took down Daemen College's Jessica Robins and Gretchen Ringler, 8-1, before falling to seventh-seeded Victoria Barbetta and Isabelle Parker of Stonehill College.
