Freshman Dakota Mulcay (Goffstown, N.H.) hit his first career home run, but that would be all the offense the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team could muster, as it was swept by Pace University in a doubleheader to open Northeast-10 play Saturday at Finnerty Field. The Penmen were blanked, 1-0, in game one, before falling, 4-2, in the second game.

Redshirt-junior John Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) collected half of Southern New Hampshire's eight hits on the day and was the only Penmen with multiple base knocks, going 4-for-6 with a walk and a run scored in the doubleheader.

In the first game, graduate student Andrew Lalonde (Bedford, N.H.) and Pace starter Dan Wirchansky matched zeroes through the first four innings, until Brian Bohlander led off the fifth with a double to left-center and scored on Michael Salmonese's two-out triple to center that gave the Setters a 1-0 lead.

The Penmen only put one runner on base the rest of the way and he made it no further than first base.

Lalonde (1-2) allowed just the one run on five hits, while striking out three and walking three over seven innings. Sophomore Wesley Tobin (Portsmouth, N.H.) gave up a pair of hits and struck out one in an inning of work.

Stanton went 1-for-2 with a walk, while senior Kyle Pangallo (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and redshirt-senior Ryan Sullivan (Hopkinton, Mass.) were 1-for-3 and 1-for-4, respectively.

Wirchansky fired a complete-game, three-hit shutout, striking out 10 and walking just one.

In game two, Pace reached grad student Shane McDonald (Blue Point, N.Y.) in the fourth when Paul Piccolino reached on an error to lead off the frame before Michael Gulino hit a two-run homer to left just two batters later.

The Setters extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth with another unearned run, as Felix Camacho made it aboard on a lead-off error before scoring on Piccolino's two-out single to left.

Mulcay pulled the Penmen within a run in the seventh when he followed Stanton's base hit to left with a two-run shot to left that made it 3-2.

Pace grabbed an insurance run against the SNHU bullpen in the eighth when Michael Barbato hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to right.

Stanton reached on a one-out single in the ninth, but the Penmen would not threaten.

Stanton finished 3-for-4 with a run scored. Junior Kyle Ruth (Albany, N.Y.) was 1-for-3, while Mulcay went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

McDonald was charged with three runs – one earned – on three hits, while striking out four and walking a batter. Freshman Jeffrey Praml (Bridgewater, N.J.) struck out one in two perfect frames, while senior Mitchell Powers (Portland, Maine) allowed a run on two hits and a walk in an inning of work.

Notes:
- The Penmen have dropped seven of their last eight, including three straight,.
- The home run for Mulcay was his first extra-base hit in a Penmen uniform, as well as RBI Nos. 2 and 3.
- Over his last three starts, McDonald is 2-1 with a 0.90 ERA, allowing two earned runs over 20 innings, while striking out 21 and walking five. He has held opponents to a .188 batting average during that span.
- Despite taking the loss in game one, Lalonde has now given up just five earned runs over 27-and-a-third innings this season, submitting a 1.65 ERA and striking out 10.9 per nine innings, as he has punched out 33 and walked eight in his four starts. Batters are hitting just .208 against him.
