Graduate student Andrew Lalonde (Bedford, N.H.) did not allow an earned run over seven-plus innings and classmate Thomas Buonopane (Peabody, Mass.) knocked in a pair of runs, as the 18th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team opened its five-game Florida trip with a 4-1 win against Bloomfield College on Friday night at the Santaluces Sports Complex.
Southern New Hampshire scratched an unearned run across in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. After back-to-back one-out singles by sophomore Tom Blandini (Bow, N.H.) and redshirt-junior John Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.), Bloomfield recorded a second out and looked like it was going to get out of the inning unscathed, but senior Caleb Potter (Mentor, Ohio) hit a ball that the second baseman could not handle, which allowed Blandini to score.
The Penmen doubled the lead in the second, as senior Kyle Pangallo (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) reached with a two-out single, swiped second base and came around on Buonopane's RBI single.
Bloomfield sliced the deficit in half in the fourth when Harry Montero reached on an error and eventually scored on a passed ball to make it 2-1.
SNHU grabbed the run back in the sixth when Potter led off by smashing a triple and then scoring on a passed ball to reclaim the two-run lead.
With the game in the hands of the Penmen bullpen, the offense added an insurance run in the ninth, with Buonopane delivering an RBI double that scored redshirt-sophomore Joshua Goldstein (Haverhill, Mass.), who began the frame with a walk.
Lalonde (1-0) was stellar over seven-plus innings, allowing one run – unearned – on five hits, while punching out 11 and walking just one. Sophomore Wesley Tobin (Portsmouth, N.H.) struck out one in a perfect inning of work, while junior Hayden Manning (Portland, Conn.) notched his first save with a perfect ninth, fanning a pair.
Buonopane was 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI, while Stanton finished 2-for-5. Blandini (walk, run) and Potter (run) were both 1-for-3. Goldstein, who entered the game in the fifth, was 1-for-1 with a walk and a run scored. Pangallo went 1-for-4 and scored a run.
Notes:
- The 11 strikeouts for Lalonde were a career high, surpassing the 10 he recorded in an 11-3 win at Stonehill College on April 15 of last season. It was also Lalonde's second longest outing of his career. He tossed eight innings in a 3-0 loss at the University of New Haven on May 12 of last season in the NE10 Championship.
