Senior Kyle Pangallo (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) went 6-for-8 and knocked in seven runs, as the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team took a pair of games from Assumption College on Wednesday at Penmen Field, including a key divisional matchup that gave the Penmen a one-game lead over the Greyhounds in the NE10 Northeast Division. SNHU recorded an 11-5 victory in game one and then rolled to a 10-1 triumph in a seven-inning second game.

Pangallo, who was on base seven times, collected a pair of doubles and scored two runs in the doubleheader. Graduate student Thomas Buonopane (Peabody, Mass.) went 5-for-8 with an RBI and three runs scored, while senior Caleb Potter (Mentor, Ohio) was 4-for-8 with a home run, four RBI and four runs scored. Redshirt-sophomore Joshua Goldstein (Haverhill, Mass.) also had a solid day at the plate, going 3-for-7 with three RBI and scoring a run.

In game one, Assumption jumped on some early ineffectiveness from senior Mitchell Powers (Portland, Maine) to push a pair across in the top of the first inning and take a 2-0 lead.

Southern New Hampshire would chop the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning before Potter led off the second with a solo shot to left to even the score, 2-2. Later in the frame, back-to-back two-out doubles from Pangallo and Goldstein snapped the tie and put SNHU in front, 3-2.

The Penmen then hung four in the third, with walks to freshmen Dakota Mulcay (Goffstown, N.H.) and Sam Henrie (Middleboro, Mass.), sandwiched around a Potter double to center, loading the bases with no one out. Pangallo delivered two batters later with a one-out, two-run single to right-center that added an insurance run. Goldstein followed with a base hit to the same spot to plate another run, before sophomore Tom Blandini (Bow, N.H.) stroked a two-out single to left-center to nudge the lead to 7-2.

Powers settled down and cruised into the fifth before running into trouble. After a strikeout to begin the inning, three straight base hits, including an RBI single from Jared Brescia, made it a three-run game. Three batters later, Trevor McQuade's two-out, bases-loaded single through the right side brought in a pair that trimmed the Greyhounds' deficit to 7-5 and ended Powers' outing.

Potter's fielder's choice ground out in the sixth made it 8-5, before the Penmen capitalized on a two-out error in the seventh to hang a three-spot. Grad student Taylor Olmstead (Greenwich, Conn.) led off the frame with a homer to center and, following two straight groundouts, a dropped pop up by the shortstop extended the inning. Buonopane took advantage with a single to center that knocked in a run, while a hit by pitch to redshirt-junior John Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) and a walk to Mulcay loaded the bases for Potter, who drew another walk to make it 11-5.

Buonopane was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Potter (walk, three RBI, two runs), Pangallo (two RBI, run), Goldstein (two RBI, run) and Blandini (walk, RBI, two runs) were all 2-for-4. Olmstead (walk, RBI, run) and Stanton were each 1-for-4, with Mulcay going 0-for-2, drawing three walks and scoring a run.

Powers was charged with five runs on six hits, while striking out five and walking one, over four-and-two-thirds innings. Sophomore Wesley Tobin (Portsmouth, N.H.) earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the season, as he struck out a pair in three-and-a-third perfect innings. Sophomore Nick Artymowicz (Seaville, N.J.) tossed a perfect ninth.

Southern New Hampshire jumped on the board in game two with three in the second inning, as a 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded netted the Penmen their first run, before RBI singles from Pangallo and Goldstein made it 3-0.

SNHU doubled its lead with three more in the third. After Buonopane was hit with a pitch to begin the frame, walks to Stanton and Mulcay loaded the bases before junior Joshua Zbierski (Stafford Springs, Conn.) drew another walk to force in a run. Pangallo's two-out, two-run single to right-center capped the damage and extended the lead to 6-0.

Pangallo made 7-0 in the fifth when his double to right-center plated Zbierski, who drew a lead-off walk and stole second.

Jake Byrne finally put the Greyhounds on the board with a two-out, opposite-field solo home run to right in the sixth, but the Penmen would answer with three in the bottom half, as an RBI double to right from Potter and run-scoring singles by freshman Idelson Taveras (Lawrence, Mass.) and Pangallo ran the lead to 10-1.

Pangallo finished 4-for-4 with a career-high five RBI and a run scored. Buonopane was 2-for-3 and scored a run, while Potter went 2-for-4 with an RBI and pair of runs scored. Goldstein was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Zbierski did not record an official at bat, but was on base four times and scored twice. Stanton went 1-for-1 with two walks and a run scored, with Mulcay going 0-for-1, walking twice and scoring a pair of runs.

In his first start of the season, redshirt-junior Jake Walkinshaw (Seymour, Conn.) fired four shutout innings, allowing three hits, walking striking out a pair and issuing a walk. Junior Hayden Manning (Portland, Conn.) walked two batters and recorded a strikeout in a third of an inning. Freshman Jeffrey Praml (Bridgewater, N.J.) gave up one run on one hit, while striking out one, in an inning-and-two-thirds. Senior Ivon Clough (Dublin, N.H.) struck out two in a perfect inning of work.
