Eight different Penmen drove in a run and graduate student Andrew Lalonde (Bedford, N.H.) went the distance on the mound, as the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team recorded a 12-6 victory against in-city rival Saint Anselm College on Saturday at Sullivan Park.
Southern New Hampshire moved out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when sophomore Tom Blandini (Bow, N.H.) led off the game with a triple to right and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by redshirt-senior Ryan Sullivan (Hopkinton, Mass.).
The Penmen added three more in the second, as an RBI base hit by redshirt-sophomore Joshua Goldstein (Haverhill, Mass.) and two-run single up the middle from grad student Thomas Buonopane (Peabody, Mass.) made it 4-0. Senior Caleb Potter (Mentor, Ohio) tacked on another run in the third with RBI knock to left.
SNHU broke it open in the fourth when it sent 10 men to the plate and scored four times. Buonopane led off the frame with a single up the middle, stole second and eventually scored on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded two batters later, a two-out walk to senior Kyle Pangallo (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) brought in a run that pushed the lead to 7-0. Another pair came in when Goldstein hit a fielder's choice grounder to short, but a throwing error continued the inning and widened the margin to 9-0.
Saint Anselm reached Lalonde in the bottom half when an error brought in two runs, before a Connor Parent sac fly to center closed the gap to 9-3.
RBI singles in the fifth from freshman Dakota Mulcay (Goffstown, N.H.) and grad student Taylor Olmstead (Greenwich, Conn.) pushed the Penmen advantage to 11-3, before Dan Bodi's two-out, run-scoring single up the middle in the sixth put another run on the board for Saint Anselm.
Blandini tacked on another run in the eighth with an RBI single up the middle, with the Hawks capping the scoring in the ninth on Max Silverman's two-run double to right-center.
Potter was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, an RBI and a run scored. Blandini (walk, RBI, run), Sullivan (RBI, two runs), Mulcay (walk, RBI, two runs) and Olmstead (walk, RBI, run) were all 2-for-4. Buonopane (two RBI, run) and Pangallo (walk, RBI, two runs) both finished 2-for-5.
Lalonde (4-2) threw the first complete game of his career, allowing six runs – four earned – on 12 hits, while striking out a pair and not issuing a walk over nine innings.
