Freshman Dakota Mulcay (Goffstown, N.H.) and senior Caleb Potter (Mentor, Ohio) each hit their team-leading seventh home run of the season, and redshirt-sophomore Joshua Goldstein (Haverhill, Mass.) recorded a four-hit night, as the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team defeated Franklin Pierce University, 12-4, Tuesday evening at Penmen Field to sweep the regular-season series from the Ravens for the second straight year.
Southern New Hampshire wasted no time jumping out to a lead, as it sent 11 men to the plate, using five hits and a pair of errors hang a six-spot in the bottom of the first. After sophomore Tom Blandini (Bow, N.H.) began the frame by reaching on an error by the first baseman, graduate student Thomas Buonopane (Peabody, Mass.) drew a walk, before redshirt-senior Ryan Sullivan (Hopkinton, Mass.) dropped down a sacrifice bunt that the pitcher would throw away trying to get him at first, allowing a pair of runs to score. Mulcay then followed with a two-run shot to right that quickly made it 4-0. Back-to-back doubles from Potter and sophomore Jake Coro (Johnston, R.I.) brought in a run, before a balk on Coro's straight steal attempt of home capped the scoring.
Franklin Pierce then went to work in the top of the second, with a double down the right field line from Adam Chase, a walk to Zack Tower and a single to left from James Boria loading the bases with two outs. Senior starter Mitchell Powers (Portland, Maine) then locked in, picking up a called strike three to get out of the jam.
The Penmen left two on in both the second and third innings, but Powers continued to deal, keeping the Ravens off the board. SNHU added two more in the fourth when Mulcay drove a single through the right side, with Potter following two batters later by sending a pay-off pitch deep over the fence in center to run the lead to 8-0.
The Franklin Pierce bats awoken in the top of the sixth, as an infield single to third from Stephen Octave, followed by a throwing error on the force at second on a fielder's choice grounder, set up a three-run blast to center from Tower that put the Ravens on the board. Two batters later, a high fly ball to center looked like it would be the second out of the inning, but it was lost in the lights and ended up as a triple for Boria, who then scored on a sac fly to center by Joe Napolitano that trimmed the Southern New Hampshire advantage to 8-4.
The Penmen grabbed two of those runs back in the home half of the inning. Potter's one-out single through the right side began the trouble, before a two-out base hit up the middle from senior Kyle Pangallo (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) plated the first run. Pangallo then swiped second and scored when Goldstein dropped a ball in down the right field line that fell safely and widened the gap to 10-4.
SNHU added two more in the eighth, taking advantage of a three-base error by the Franklin Pierce right fielder that put redshirt-junior John Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) at third to begin the inning. After Coro was hit by a pitch two batters later, an RBI double to center by Pangallo and a run-scoring single to center for Goldstein made it 12-4.
Powers (3-2) allowed four runs – two earned – on nine hits, while striking out five and walking one, over six innings. Redshirt-junior Jake Walkinshaw (Seymour, Conn.) collected his second save with three scoreless innings, allowing just a single hit, while striking out a pair.
Goldstein finished 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while Potter (two RBI, three runs) and Pangallo (two RBI, run) were both 3-for-5. Buonopane was 2-for-4 with a walk and run scored. Mulcay went 2-for-5 with two RBI and scored twice, with Sullivan (run) and Coro (RBI, two runs), both turning in 1-for-3 performances.
