Senior Alex Satrustegui (Pamplona, Spain) tallied the game-winning goal and a career-high two assists to lead the sixth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team to a 4-2 come-from-behind win against Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday night at Jess Dow Field.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- It is already the fourth time this year Satrustegui has notched a four-point game.
- Redshirt-sophomore Andre Pereira (Cheshire, Conn.), graduate student João Brum (Ribeira Grande, Portugal) and sophomore Tom Marriott (Nottingham, England) all added goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Southern New Hampshire grabbed a 1-0 advantage just 12:01 into the match when Southern Connecticut goalkeeper Jake Davis punched away a cross, but Pereira collected the ball and unleashed a shot that ricocheted off the post and in.
- The score stayed that way until midway through the 37th minute when Devante Teixeira scored two goals in a span of 3:33 to send the Owls to the break with a 2-1 advantage.
- The Penmen would come out in the second half on a mission, tying the match just over four minutes in when Brum gathered a pass from Satrustegui and sent a shot from the right side that curled inside the near post to knot the match at 2-all.
- Satrustegui, the nation's leader in goals, then put the Penmen in front for good early in the 56th minute, picking up a thru-ball from senior Olafur Einarsson (Esafjordur, Iceland) on the left side of the box and sending a low shot into the far corner of the net.
- Marriott gave SNHU an insurance goal late in the 72nd minute when Satrustegui delivered a cross from the right side that Marriott booted into the back of the net to make it 4-2.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Senior goalkeeper Daniel Milton (Ajax, Ontario) made three saves to remain perfect on the season, while Davis piled up eight stops for the Owls.
- The Penmen owned a 17-9 advantage in shots, including 10-4 in the second half.
- Southern New Hampshire also held a 6-1 margin in corner kicks, including 5-1 in the opening stanza.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire, which is ranked sixth in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Poll, is 9-0-0 for the first time since 2015 and the third time in five years.
- Pereira's goal was the first of his career.
- Satrustegui has now scored in 21 of the 26 matches he has played in with the Penmen, who are 19-2 when he finds the back of the net.
- With 14 goals and two assists for 30 points through nine games, Satrustegui is nearly all the way to his goal (15), assist (4) and point (34) totals from 17 matches a year ago.
- Marriott, who leads the Northeast-10 in assists and ranks third in points, has registered at least one point in seven of the nine matches this season
- Southern New Hampshire improves to 90-11-9 (.859) over its last 110 matches dating back to the beginning of the 2013 National Championship season.
