SNHU Returns From Southern Maine With Plenty Of Top Finishes

The Southern New Hampshire women's track and field team competed at the University of Southern Maine Saturday in the final meet of the calendar year. Several Penmen turned in winning efforts, including sophomore Meghan Stroh, who notched a pair of wins for the second consecutive week.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Grad student Ashley Elder (Bristol, Conn.) won the shot put with a throw of 15.07m.  Four other members of the team finished in the top eight, including senior Jalisa Allen (Foxboro, Mass.), sophomore Bennie Alula (Hartford, Conn.), sophomore Theresa Spear (Westerly, R.I.) and sophomore Tatyanna Beckford (Orange, N.J.).
  • Allen finished second with a career-best 11.55m.
  • Alula was third at 11.53m in the shot put and second in the women's weight throw at 13.73m.  Both were career marks.
  • Stroh was the winner in the 400m race with a time of 1:02.49.
  • Sophomore Olivia Coco (Bedford, N.H.) turned in a third place run at 1:06.35
  • Senior Alanna Murphy (Nashua, N.H.) turned in the top effort in the triple jump with 10.45m and she also won the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.86 seconds.  
  • Freshman Meredith DeNegris (Wallingford, Conn.) finished third in the triple jump at 9.66m.
  • Senior Jill Couto (Newton Junction, N.H.) won the mile race with a time of 5:29.28.  
  • Stroh teamed up with freshman Jaida Long (East Hartford, Conn.),  Skyler Tautkus (Laconia, N.H.) and sophomore Zeandrea Ward (Hartford, Conn.) to win the women's 4x200m relay in 1:49.23.
  • Ward was the winner in the 600m race with a run of 1:46.22, a career best in the event.
  • In her first attempt at the long jump, sophomore Makayla Norton (Dudley, Mass.) finished third at 4.94m, just ahead of teammate freshman Kelsey Peirce (Brentwood, N.H.).
  • SNHU also finished 1-2-3 in the 4x400 relay.  The winning team consisted of Ward, Tautkus, Coco and Peirce with a 4:23.98.
NOTES
  • The program's distance runners took the meet off and will return to action when the season picks back up next month.

  • Southern New Hampshire will return to action on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at the Smith College Pioneer Invitational in Northampton, Mass.
