Grad student Ashley Elder (Bristol, Conn.), Sophomore Meghan Stroh (New Fairfield, Conn.), and junior Jill Couto (Newton Junction, N.H.) each won individual events Saturday, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's track and field team opened its 2019-20 season at the Emmanuel College Opener at the Reggie Lewis Center.
The Penmen also claimed a relay win, and sophomore Ashley Corcoran (East Longmeadow Mass.) met an NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the 5,000 meter run at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. Corcoran ran the race in a new program record 17:17.01 in her first race of the season.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Elder opened her indoor season with a win in the shot put. Her throw was 14.72m (48' 3.5"). That met the NCAA provisional qualifying standards for the shot put. She competed in the NCAA Division II National Championships last season in the event.
- Stroh was the winner in the 400m race with a time of 59.94.
- Couto had a terrific race in the 800m, winning the event in 2:21.32, less than a second off her program record run of 2:20.62 last year in the indoor opener.
- Stroh and Couto teamed up with freshman Skyler Tautkus (Laconia, N.H.) and sophomore Zeandrea Ward (Hartford, Conn.) to win the women's 4x400m relay in 4:07.24.
NOTES
- In addition to Stroh's win in the 400, Ward ran third in the race in 1:01.38. Tautkus wound up in fifth place at 1:02.89.
- Junior Maura Coakley (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and senior Madison Brand (Valhalla, N.Y.) finished 2-3 in the 3000 meter run.
- Sophomore Grace Henson (Cumberland, R.I.) ran 2nd in the 5000 meter run in 18:33.78. That was her career best for the event.

- Southern New Hampshire will participate next Saturday (Dec. 14) at Southern Maine.
