Box Score

When and Where: March 12, 2019 – Lake Buena Vista, Fla. (ESPN Wide World of Sports)
Score:  Southern New Hampshire University 20, University of Bridgeport 11
Records: SNHU 2-2, UB 1-2

Freshman Kelsey Long (Woburn, Mass.) recorded a career-best nine points and classmate Hayle Ashford (Atkinson, N.H.) made a career-high 13 saves to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's lacrosse team to a 20-11 triumph over the University of Bridgeport on Tuesday evening at the ESPN Wide World of Sports.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Long also reached career highs in both goals (6) and assists (3).
  • Ashford, in her second career start, submitted her best performance, turning away 13 of the 24 shots she faced.
  • Senior Alexis Felt (Manchester, N.H.) notched six points on five goals and an assist.
  • Senior Kristin Wilder (Framingham, Mass.) and freshman Catherine Derhak (Londonderry, N.H.) each added three goals and an assist.
  • Junior Merry Harrington (Peabody, Mass.) tallied three points on two goals and an assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Southern New Hampshire cracked the scoreboard first when Derhak converted a free-position opportunity 7:29 into the contest. Derhak then set up Long's first goal to make it 2-0 less than 10 minutes in. After Harrington made it 3-1 at the 15:43 mark, Barbara Orsini scored back-to-back goals off assists from Courtney Forry to leave the game tied, 3-3, with 13:17 left.
  • Long scored just 12 seconds later to give the Penmen the lead for good and then collected an assist on Derhak's second to open a 5-3 lead with 11:20 remaining in the opening half.
  • Felt, Long and Wilder all found the back of the net, as the Penmen scored three of the final four goals over the last 10:36 to bring an 8-4 lead into the break.
  • Bridgeport opened the second half with two of the first three goals to trim its deficit to 9-6 under four minutes in. Long fed Harrington and then, following a free-position tally from freshman Erin Gorton (Kennebunk, Maine), Harrington returned the favor to Long to make it a 12-6 game with 22:57 to play.
  • The Purple Knights responded by reeling off four-in-a-row to pull within 12-10 at the 15:21 mark, but the Penmen defense locked down from there and allowed SNHU to close the game on an 8-1 run over the final 11:56. Felt scored four goals during the stretch, while Long contributed two goals and Wilder chimed in with a goal and an assist.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • The Penmen held a 40-32 advantage in shots, as well as a 22-10 margin in draw controls.
  • SNHU was 6-for-12 on its free-position opportunities, while Bridgeport went just 1-for-7.

NOTES

  • Wilder, who is now two goals away from becoming the first 200-goal scorer in program history, passed former teammate Alexa Bedell for third on the program's all-time points list and is now just 21 points shy of the record.
  • Felt's six points give her 111 for her career and move her into 16th place on the program's all-time points list.
  • Harrington's two goals give her 59 for her career.
