Graduate student Jake Walkinshaw (Seymour, Conn.) pitched a gem in a 2-1 game-one victory, as the seventh-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader with Le Moyne College at Penmen Field. Le Moyne took the second game, 9-2.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Walkinshaw (5-0) went the distance and allowed one run on seven hits, while matching his career high with 13 strikeouts and walking just one.
  • Redshirt-sophomore Marcus Chavez (Queens, N.Y.) went 3-for-4, playing the first end of the twinbill behind the plate.
  • Redshirt-junior Sean Doherty (Haverhill, Mass.) finished 3-for-5 with a pair of walks, an RBI and a run scored in the two games.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1

  • With both teams combining for just three hits through the first four innings, Southern New Hampshire struck first in the fourth without the benefit of a hit. Junior Phoenix Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drew a leadoff work and, after two quick outs, stole second, but the throw down sailed into center field, sending him to third. A wild pitch in the dirt bounced a short distance away, but the catcher could not find it in time, with Hernandez sliding across the plate with the game's first run.
  • SNHU doubled its lead in the fifth, again without a hit. Junior Jake Coro (Johnston, R.I.) led off and was hit by a pitch, before moving to second on a walk to classmate Dylan Faircloth (Cleveland, Texas), advancing to third on a deep fly ball to the wall in center by senior Joshua Zbierski (Stafford Springs, Conn.) and scoring on another fly to deep center off the bat of Doherty
  • Le Moyne sliced its deficit in half in the top of the sixth when Brian O'Mara led off with a base hit, stole second and scored when Nick Nevins snuck one through the right side.
  • The score stayed that way into the ninth, when the Dolphins had runners at first and second with two outs, but Walkinshaw dialed it up to get the game-ending strikeout.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 1

  • Doherty was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.
  • Redshirt-junior Joshua Goldstein (Haverhill, Mass.) went 1-for-3 and drew a walk.
  • Hernandez (run) and Faircloth each finished 0-for-2, but walked twice.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2

  • Le Moyne jumped out to an early lead in the first inning against junior Brian Eddy (Worcester, Mass.). After recording the first out, Eddy issued a walk and allowed back-to-back singles to load the bases before Justin Tuey grounded one up the middle that had the potential to be an inning-ending double play, but the ball caromed off the second base bag and two runs came in. Following a wild pitch and an intentional walk to load the bases, senior Matthew Messier (No. Troy, Vt.) entered and gave up a two-run double to David DiNorcia, before Nick Spinella's RBI groundout to second made it 5-0.
  • The Dolphins extended their advantage to 6-0 in the top of the second when O'Mara walked, went to second on a wild pitch and then third when the catcher could not locate the ball, and then scored on a sac fly to right from Camillo Spinoso.
  • Southern New Hampshire grabbed one run back in the third when Goldstein walked, went to second when freshman Alex Kennedy (Braintree, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and scored on a Faircloth base hit to right-center.
  • The Penmen pulled within 6-2 in the fourth with a bit of small ball. After Doherty drew a leadoff walk, he was sacrificed to second by Hernandez, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on an RBI groundout to second from sophomore Idelson Taveras (Lawrence, Mass.).
  • Le Moyne got back both runs back in the fifth, however, with Andrew Taft collecting an RBI single and Tuey picking up a sac fly to make it 8-2.
  • The Dolphins tacked on another in the sixth on a Nevins RBI groundout.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 2

  • Doherty went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
  • Hernandez was 1-for-2.
  • Faircloth finished 1-for-4 with an RBI, with fellow junior Tom Blandini (Bow, N.H.) going 1-for-5.
  • Eddy (0-2) was charged with five runs on three hits and a pair of walks in a third of an inning.
  • Messier relinquished three runs on five hits over three-and-two-thirds innings, while fanning a pair and walking a batter.
  • Redshirt-junior Brendan Welch (Easton, Mass.) worked four hitless innings, striking out seven and walking two, while giving up a run.
  • Senior Hayden Manning (Portland, Conn.) struck out one in a perfect ninth.

NOTES

  • Southern New Hampshire had won 17 of its previous 20, including 11 of the last 12, and nine straight before the loss in game two.
  • SNHU had also won three-in-a-row against Le Moyne before the defeat.
  • The Penmen are now 9-1 at home this season and move to 84-18 (.824) at Penmen Field since the start of the 2014 season.
  • Walkinshaw's 21st career victory moves him past Derrick Sylvester (2010-11, 13-14) and into sole possession of second place on the program's all-time wins list. He is currently seven wins shy of the all-time mark, held by Alex Person (2014-17).

UP NEXT

  • The Penmen return to action Tuesday, April 9 (3:30 p.m.) when they take on Saint Michael's College to begin a five-game road stretch.
  • The next home game for SNHU is Friday, April 19 (3:30 p.m.) when it plays host to Bentley University at Penmen Field.
