Results: Southern New Hampshire 3rd/11 (38 points)
The Southern New Hampshire University women's track and field team opened up the 2020 Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships with a pair of wins, landing in third place after one day of competition.
SNHU accumulated 38 points in Thursday's scoring competitions. Stonehill, the six-time defending champ, is in first place with 66 points.
Standout Performances - Scoring on Thursday:
10 points- Senior Ashley Elder (Bristol, Conn.) won the weight throw with a toss of 15.25m.
10 points- Junior Maura Coakley (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) turned in a new personal best of 17:44.87 while winning the women's 5,000m race.
6 points- Freshman Lydia Mathson (Nashua, N.H.) ran a PR of 18:32.73, finishing in third place in the 5,000.
6 points- Senior Alanna Murphy (Nashua, N.H.), pictured in the high jump this morning, finished 3rd in the pentathlon (2,900 points). 836 points came with her top run in the 60 hurdles.
3 points- Sophomore Bennie Alula (Hartford, Conn.) had a 14.02m in the weight throw, good for sixth place.
3 points- The women's distance medley team finished sixth in 12:48.09. Running on Thursday were sophomore Grace Henson (Cumberland, R.I.), sophomore Meghan Stroh (New Fairfield, Conn.), freshman Alexarae Clark (Deer Park, N.Y.) and freshman Sarah Zarakotas (Deerfield, N.H.).
Friday Preview:
The competition concludes on Friday. The Penmen are in position for its best-ever finish in the NE10 Indoor Championships - the team finished seventh with 39 total points last year. Among those with good scoring chances on Friday are Elder (shot put), sophomore Ashley Corcoran (East Longmeadow, Mass.) in the mile run, Coakley in the 3,000m, senior Jill Couto (Newton Junction, N.H.) in the 800 meters, and Stroh (400m). SNHU will also compete in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.
