#16 Baseball Mashes Way to Second Doubleheader Sweep of Saint Anselm

All 13 batters that received an at bat had a hit and 12 drove in at least one run, as the 16th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team erupted for 31 runs and 25 hits, while taking two more from Saint Anselm College on Saturday at Penmen Field. SNHU posted a 7-4 win in game one and then rolled to a 24-1 victory in the second game.

KEY MOMENTS - GAME 1
  • Southern New Hampshire drew first blood in the bottom of the second, with redshirt-freshman Michael LaRocca (Vero Beach, Fla.) forcing in a run with a bases loaded walk and another run scoring on a wild pitch.
  • After Saint Anselm tied the game, 3-3, in the top of the fifth, the Penmen answered in a big way in the home half. Henrie delivered a huge blow with a three-run blast to center and then just one batter later, Taveras hit a solo shot to right that made it 7-3.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE - GAME 1
  • Graduate student Wesley Tobin (Portsmouth, N.H.; 2-0) started and went the distance, allowing four runs on five hits over the seven innings, while striking out nine and walking four.
  • Taveras finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Henrie was 1-for-2 with a walk, three RBI and a run scored.
  • Redshirt-freshman Danniel Rivera (New Britain, Conn.; walk) and sophomore Bryce Reagan (Amherst, N.H.; run) were both 1-for-3.
  • Sophomore Kieran Dowd (E. Islip, N.Y.) was 1-for-4 and scored a run.
KEY MOMENTS - GAME 2
  • The Penmen held a 1-0 lead when they hung an eight spot in the fourth inning to break it open. Mulcay started it by leading off the frame with solo bomb to center. Two runs came across on bases loaded walks, with another scoring on a wild pitch. Chavez delivered a two-run single to right, with Mulcay driving in his second run in the inning with a double to right. Redshirt-sophomore Alex Kennedy (Braintree, Mass.) capped the scoring with an RBI single to right that extended the lead to 9-0.
  • After scoring run No. 10 in the fifth, SNHU went back to work and scored six more in the sixth. A LaRocca double to the gap in left-center began the rally, with an RBI ground out and two more bases loaded walks doing damage, before Mulcay's two-run single to right made it 16-1.
  • The flood gates blew open with eight more in the seventh, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Crisci and a three-run homer from Caraher.

  • Mulcay was 3-for-4 with four RBI, three runs and a walk.
  • Caraher (three RBI, two runs) and LaRocca (RBI, run) both went 2-for-2.
  • Kennedy was 2-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored and a walk.

  • Redshirt-junior Scott Webster (Newburyport, Mass.) retired the only batter he faced.

NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, ranked 16th in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Poll, is 8-0 for the first time since 2016.
  • The Penmen are outscoring their opponents, 74-13, over the first eight games of the season.
  • Mulcay's long-ball was the 18th of his career, breaking a tie with Caleb Potter (2017-18) and moving him into a third-place tie with Derek Bauer (2015-17) on the program's all-time home run list.
  • Henrie's home run was the fifth of his career, while Taveras, Crisci and Caraher all hit their first.
  • Artymowicz has now struck out 23 batters in just 11 innings this season.
