The Southern New Hampshire University women's cross country team opened its season with a strong performance at the 43rd annual Shacklette Invitational, placing third overall in the five-team field Saturday afternoon. The Penmen were led by senior
Corrina Obernesser (Westminster, Colo.), who turned in a third-place individual finish.
KEY MOMENT
- Obernesser ran near the front from the opening mile and crossed the line in 24:37 for the six-kilometer course, less than 20 seconds behind the race winner, Rose Karow of Plymouth State. Her third-place finish marked the best individual performance for SNHU on the day and set the tone for the Penmen lineup.
NOTES
- Behind Obernesser, SNHU packed its next four scorers within just 30 seconds of each other. Junior Deirdre Bailat (No. Billerica, Mass.) placed 16th in 27:12, while freshman Faith Perry (Pawtucket, R.I.) was close behind in 19th at 27:23. Junior Aveline McCabe (White Bear Lake, Minn.) took 24th in 27:34, with junior Natalie Sicard (Nottingham, N.H.) rounding out the scoring in 27th at 27:42.
- Junior Kora Hay (Milford, N.H.) also contributed with a 29th-place showing in 27:58.
- Saint Anselm (38 points) finished ahead of Plymouth State (52) and SNHU (80) in the team standings. St. Michael's (92) and Assumption (92) tied for fourth place.
- The Northeast 10 Championship race will be run at Saint Anselm College on Sunday, October 26.
