NO. ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Freshman
Zak Whitney (Keene, N.H.) of the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team was chosen as the NE10 Rookie of the Week for the period ending March 15, the league office announced Monday.
Whitney, who also earned the honor March 9, struck out 10 and walked one, as he allowed just one run on seven hits over seven innings of game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State University. Whitney earned the win to improve to 2-0 on the season, as the Penmen cruised to a 12-5 victory. Whitney has struck out 24 and walked one over his last two outings, going 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA in that time.
Whitney has taken four turns in the rotation and is 2-0 with a 3.43 ERA, striking out 33 and walking eight over 21 innings. He leads the NE10 in strikeouts, while tying for fifth in wins, and ranking seventh in ERA and eighth in innings pitched.
Whitney and the Penmen (12-4, 4-0 NE10) are back in action next weekend for a pair of noon doubleheaders at Bentley University, beginning Saturday (March 21).
