MANCHESTER, N.H.—The Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team snapped a three-game winless streak by posting an 8-7 overtime win over the visiting Setters of Pace University on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action. With the win, the Penmen improve to 3-7 overall and 2-5 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while the Setters fall to 5-6 overall and 2-5 in league play.
The Penmen would enter halftime with a 4-1 lead, as Greg Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.) scored three times and James Sabino (Billerica, Mass.) scored once. Tom Murphy posted the lone first half goal for the Setters.
The Setters would outscore the Penmen 3-1 in the third quarter as Kevin Kadlick and Thomas Earl posted goals. Gary McKay (Billerica, Mass.) would tally the Penmen goal in the third quarter to give the Penmen the 5-3 lead entering the final frame.
The Setters would tie the game at five goals each early in the year with 10:24 remaining in the quarter on a goal, but the Penmen would score back-to-back goals to take the 7-5 lead. With 2:30 left in the quarter, Earl would tally an unassisted goal. The Setters would then force overtime on a goal by John Kolesar at the 1:30 mark.
The Setters won the initial faceoff in overtime and managed to take a few shots, but a turnover would give the Penmen control of the ball. With 2:20 remaining on the clock, Marc Novaco (Chelmsford, Mass.) would find Keith Merluzzo (Billerica, Mass.) who fired the game-winning goal past Pace goaltender Alex Cain.
Brendan O'Brien (Hopkinton, Mass.) started in goal and posted seven saves while allowing three goals in 30 minutes of action. Eric Gunst (Exeter, N.H.) played 31:20 in net, allowing four goals and recording four saves. Cain took the loss in net, posting 11 saves in the complete-game effort.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Franklin Pierce University at 7:00 p.m. at Larkin Field.
