No. 14 Baseball Downs Wilmington (Del.) in Battle of Regionally-Ranked Clubs

BOCA RATON, Fla.Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and Anthony Aceto (North Providence, R.I.) each knocked in a pair of runs as No. 14 Southern New Hampshire University defeated Wilmington (Del.) University 11-4 in non-conference baseball Monday at Lynn University.  The Penmen, who are ranked first in the latest NCBWA East Region poll, improved to 7-0, while the Wildcats, who are ranked third in the region, are now 5-3.

Seven players each had single hits for the Penmen, with O'Brien driving in a pair of runs on a second-inning single as he was 1-3 at the plate with a walk and a hit by pitch.  Aceto had an RBI single to right in the second inning and also lifted a sacrifice fly to left in the fifth. 

Penmen started Jon Massad (Shrewsbury, Mass.) went six innings on the mound, allowing five hits and four runs while striking out four.  Stephen Fortuna (Metuchen, N.J.), Curtis Hamilton (Lowell, Mass.) and Joe McCarthy (Nashua, N.H.) each worked an inning of relief for the Penmen, with Fortuna notching a pair of strikeouts.

Wilmington was led by Josh Hampton who was 3-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles.

After the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, Southern New Hampshire scored five times in the bottom of the frame.  A Jamie Wollerman (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) single up the middle plated Andy Lalli (Lakeville, Mass.), followed by Aceto's single that brought in Greg Pezzuto (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.).  After O'Brien's two-run single, Andrew Pezzuto (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) singled through the left side to bring in O'Brien.

Southern New Hampshire tacked on three runs in both the fifth and eighth innings.  In the fifth, Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) led off by reaching on an error and eventually scored on a wild pitch.  A Greg Pezzuto single brought in Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.), who was hit by a pitch, while Aceto's sac fly plated Lalli.  In the eighth, Lalli and Riley Palmer (Goffstown, N.H.) each worked bases-loaded singles, while Alejandro Diaz (Old Bridge, N.J.) lifted a sac fly to right-center that brought in Minucci, who was intentionally walked with runners at second and third and one away.

Wilmington scored its other runs with three in the sixth, with Joe Marciano delivering a two-run single to the gap in left-center.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday night when it travels to Nova Southeastern University for a 6:00 contest.
