AVCA ALL-REGION TEAMS

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman middle hitter Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) of the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team was honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Assocation (AVCA) as the 2014 Division II East Region Freshman of the Year.  She becomes the first player in program history to earn an AVCA award.

A big part of the Penmen's success in 2014, Coronis appeared in all but one match for Southern New Hampshire and led the Penmen with 268 kills, and her .321 hitting percentage ranks fourth in the Northeast-10.  The Northeast-10 Rookie of the Year and Third Team All-Conference selection recorded double-digit kills on 14 occasions, including a career-best 21 kills on October 25 against eventual conference champion Adelphi University.  A two-time Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week, Coronis, an Alvirne H.S. product, also finished first the Penmen with 50 total blocks.

Southern New Hampshire enjoyed arguably the best season in the history of the program in 2014, finishing 17-11 overall, the second-most victories in a season.  The Penmen finished with a 9-5 conference mark and qualified for the NE-10 Championship for the first time since 2003 and the second time in program history, bowing in a hard-fought 3-1 decision to second-seeded Stonehill College in the league quarterfinals.
