Box Score 2 MANCEHSTER, N.H. – Sophomore Nicole Gubellini (Salem, N.H.) and senior Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) combined to hold Stonehill College to one run in 14 innings of play on Saturday, as Southern New Hampshire University swept the Skyhawks (14-12, 8-6) in a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader at Penmen Field. The Penmen improve to 23-6 and 12-3 in league play after taking game one by a final score of 2-1, and game two 7-0.
Gubellini upped her record to 8-3 in the circle in the opener, as she allowed one run while striking out four in a complete game effort. Maloof surrendered just two singles in seven innings during the second game, and now stands at 14-1 with 15 complete games this season. In her 100th career pitching appearance, Maloof struck out four and did not issue a walk.
After Gubellini tossed a scoreless top of the first, Southern New Hampshire grabbed a 1-0 lead in the home half. Maloof smacked a one-out triple off the right field fence and scored two batters later on an RBI groundout by junior Lindsey Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H.).
Gubellini retired the next nine Stonehill batters in order before the Penmen were able to extend their lead to a pair in the bottom of the fourth on a leadoff homer from Bolduc.
The sophomore righthander continued to cruise through the Skyhawk lineup until the top half of the seventh, when Stonehill was able to get on the board with its only run of the afternoon. Michelle Carbone led off the inning with a single down the right field line and advanced to second on a groundout two batters later. Alison Sumski delivered a run scoring single to center before Gubellini retired the final hitter of the game on a groundball back to the circle.
In Saturday's second game, Maloof dominated the Skyhawks' lineup from the outset and received all the offense she would need in the bottom of the second. After sophomore Jessica Torsiello (Morris Plains, N.J.) reached on a fielder's choice and classmate Erin Morrissey (Commack, N.Y.) singled to put runners on first and second with one out, senior Holly Eicher (Stoneham, Mass.) walked to load the bases for freshman Sarah Lavallee (Candia, N.H.). Lavallee connected on a bases clearing double that gave Southern New Hampshire a 3-0 lead, and she scored the fourth run of the inning when junior Mo Hannan (Scarborough, Maine) singled up the middle two batters later.
Maloof held Stonehill hitless through the third and fourth, and the Penmen were able to tack on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Eicher and Lavallee led off the inning with back-to-back base hits before a sacrifice bunt from freshman Brittany Perdigao (Stoughton, Mass.) put runners on second and third with one away. Hannan followed with an RBI single through the left side to make it 5-0, and Maloof capped the inning's scoring with a base knock to left that brought in Southern New Hampshire's sixth run of the game.
The Skyhawks threatened in the fifth, as a pitch hit the leadoff batter before Sumski singled to put two on with nobody out. Maloof settled in from there and retired next three hitters in order to extinguish the potential rally. In the sixth, the senior righthander induced three consecutive groundball outs in the top of the inning, and drove in the final run of the game in the bottom half with an RBI base hit that plated Perdigao.
Hannan and Maloof led the Penmen offense, as they each finished the day with three hits and two runs batted in. Lavallee chipped in with a 2-for-3 performance in game two that included three RBI, while Bolduc added two hits and drove in a pair during the doubleheader.
Southern New Hampshire wraps up a seven-game homestand on Tuesday when it plays host to Saint Michael's College at 2:30 p.m. at Penmen Field. Stonehill resumes play on Monday when it travels to Saint Anselm College for a 4 p.m. contest with the Hawks.
