Softball Sees Season Come to a Close in NCAA East Super Regional

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Senior Holly Eicher (Stoneham, Mass.) finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, but a grand slam off the bat of Brenna Martini propelled Adelphi University to a 4-2 victory over Southern New Hampshire University in the 2015 NCAA Division II Softball Super Regional at Penmen Field on Saturday. The Penmen conclude the most successful season in school history at 35-9, while the Panthers improve to 30-20 and advance to the College World Series in Oklahoma City.

A day after throwing 216 pitches and 14.1 innings, senior Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) surrendered just two hits, three earned runs and struck out five in her 25th complete game of the season.

Southern New Hampshire was able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a double by Eicher. Sophomore Erin Morrissey (Commack, N.Y.) delivered a two-out single before Eicher tagged the next pitch into the left centerfield gap to score Morrissey.

After being held hitless through the first two innings, Adelphi generated all the offense it would need in the bottom of the third. After Krista King reached on one-out error, Jordan Catalano was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Victoria Wink followed with an infield hit to load the bases for Martini, and she lined a 2-0 pitch over the wall in left to give the Panthers a 4-1 edge.

The Penmen would not go quietly, as they answered back with a run in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Jessica Torsiello (Morris Plains, N.J.) reached on a fielder's choice before freshman Brittany Perdigao (Stoughton, Mass.) dropped a bunt single down the first base line. After a Morrissey sacrifice advanced the runners to second and third, Eicher ripped a single to left to score Torsiello and cut the deficit to a pair at 4-2.

It would be as close as Southern New Hampshire would get, as Adelphi starter Lindsay Mapes held the Penmen off the board for the final three innings of play. Mapes scattered seven hits and allowed two runs while striking out four in a complete game effort to improve to 18-9.

After collecting three RBI on Friday and two more on Saturday, Eicher drove in all five Southern New Hampshire runs during the Super Regional. She finished with three hits in eight plate appearances, and tied Maloof and Perdigao for the team lead in hits during the two-game series.

The Penmen wrap up the finest season in school history with a program-record 35 wins, a third consecutive Northeast-10 Northeast Division title and second straight Northeast-10 Tournament crown. Southern New Hampshire captured the NCAA East II Regional and advanced to the Super Regional for the first time in school history. The Penmen also set a new program benchmark with seven All-Conference selections and three All-Region honorees.
