Track and Field Wins Plymouth State Winter Classic

RESULTS 

When and Where: December 8, 2018 – Plymouth, N.H. (George E. Davis Track)
Result: Southern New Hampshire University – 1st/10 (215.0)

Buoyed by twelve first-place finishes, including two each by sophomore Megan Decker (Durham, Conn.), junior Alanna Murphy (Nashua, N.H.), junior Jill Couto (Newton Junction, N.H.) and senior Ashley Elder (Bristol, Conn.), the Southern New Hampshire University women's track and field team took first place Saturday at the Plymouth State University Winter Classic. The Penmen totaled 215.00 points.

In addition, freshman Ashley Corcoran (East Longmeadow, Mass.) took the 500-meter run in a course record 1:23.75.  Junior Jill Dieterich (Commack, N.Y.) topped the field in the 3,000m run at 10:59.84.

SNHU also won two relays. The 4x200 team with Decker, junior Sam Cummings (Peabody, Mass.), freshman Kate Hall (Pawcatuck, Conn.), and freshman Zeandrea Ward (Hartford, Conn.) finished first.  So did the 4x400 team of senior Sydney Blais (Pascoag, R.I.), freshman Olivia Coco (Bedford, N.H.), freshman Makayla Norton (Dudley, Mass.), and freshman Meghan Stroh (New Fairfield, Conn.).  

Decker ran to victory in the 60- meter dash in a personal best time of 8.18 and added a victory in the 200-meter dash in 27.33.  The 200-meter dash was dominated by the Penmen, with SNHU taking the top six positions and eight of the top nine in the field of 42.  Freshman runners Ward and Hall finished second and third in the event.

Murphy's day featured wins in the 60- meter hurdles and triple jump.  She ran 9.65 to take the hurdles race and her 11.04m in the triple jump was a top performance.

Couto turned in the top performances in two events.  Her mile time of 5:16.40 was a new course record.  She also won the 800m in 2:26.57.

Elder won the two events in which she competed. In the shot put, Elder posted a heave of 14.40 meters, a new Davis track record.  She added a win in the weight throw with 15.11 meters, just off her personal best of 15.18m.

 

Notes:
- The Penmen won the meet with 215 points, followed by host Plymouth State with 111 points and Fitchburg State with 69 points.  10 schools took part in the meet.
- Also earnings points in Saturday's meet were junior Jalisa Allen (Foxboro, Mass.), sophomore Maura Coakley (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and freshmen Eliza Fandel (Reading, Mass.), Jordan Woodford (Berkley, Mass.), Grace Henson (Cumberland, R.I.), Theresa Spear (Westerly, R.I.), Kathleen Landry (Charlton, Mass.) and Bennie Alula (Hartford, Conn.).

What's Next:
The Penmen are idle until January 11, 2019, when they head to Staten Island, N.Y. to take part in the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartan Invitational.
