Freshman Alanna Murphy (Nashua, N.H.) set a program record in both the triple jump and the 60-meter hurdles to highlight the Southern New Hampshire University women's track and field team's appearance at the 2017 New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The Penmen posted a total of four new school benchmarks, as both the 4x800-meter relay team and the distance medley relay teams clocked program bests in their final meet of the indoor season.
Murphy propelled herself 11.04 meters (36 feet, 2.75 inches) in the triple jump and cruised across the finish line in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.45 seconds. She topped her previous triple jump personal and program record of 10.76 meters (35 feet, 3.75 inches), which was set on January 18 at the Tufts Stampede and Multi. Murphy edged her prior 60-meter hurdles PR by .03 seconds, a time that was also registered at the Tufts Stampede and Multi.
The relay teams each bested program records that were set just one week ago at the 2017 Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. The 4x800-meter relay contingent, consisting of freshmen Jill Couto (Newton Junction, N.H.), Jill Dieterich (Commack, N.Y.) and Madison Brand (Valhalla, N.Y.), as well as junior Maddie Bardier (Pembroke, N.H.) totaled a time of nine minutes, 50.64 seconds to shatter their previous standard by 16.20 seconds. The distance medley relay team of Couto, Dieterich, Brand and junior Amber Herrington (Burlington Township, N.J.) put forth a 12:55.11 performance, narrowly eclipsing their most recent showing of 12:55.57 at the NE10 Championships.
Notes:
- Murphy's time in the 60-meter hurdles was the fourth fastest by a Division II student-athlete and No. 24 overall. Her triple jump performance was fifth-best in the DII ranks and No. 13 among Divisions I, II and III.
- Both relay teams slotted in at No. 13 overall in their respective events. The 4x800-meter squad was second in Division II, while the DMR was third.
- Northeastern University captured the women's team championship with 151 points, and the Huskies were followed by the University of Rhode Island (59) and Southern Connecticut State University (57).
