Freshman Ashley Elder (Bristol, Conn.) and junior Sahara Brown (Center Barnstead, N.H.) each posted individual victories to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's track and field team at the Corsair Classic Invitational at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth on Saturday. Elder captured the discus throw while, for the second consecutive meet, Brown took the javelin throw.
Elder fired the discus a distance of 38.07 meters to top Brown, who turned in a toss of 32.78 meters in the final. Junior Melissa Handy (Durham, Conn.) also checked into the top-10 of the event with a 28.92-meter showing, which was good enough for sixth, and sophomore Melissa Melanson (Goffstown, N.H.) finished at No. 11 after a 26.78-meter throw.
Brown posted her second javelin victory of the year by a margin over more than five meters. After an opening throw of 43.07 meters, she launched it 38.95 meters in the final, which was 5.51 meters past her next closest competitor.
In the shot put, Elder used a heave of 10.82 meters to earn her second top-five finish of the day at No. 4. Handy also cracked the top-10 in the event with a 9.72-meter throw in the event final to place 10th.
The hammer throw featured a pair of Penmen in the top-six spots, as both Melanson and Elder were among the top competitors in the event. Melanson finished fourth with a toss of 38.19 meters, while Elder was just behind her in sixth after a 36.10-meter performance.
The Southern New Hampshire relay teams turned in strong showings on Saturday, as the 4x100-meter and the 4x400-meter groups finished third and second, respectively. Sophomores Skyler Shugrue (Worcester, Mass.) and Amber Herrington (Burlington Township, N.J.) joined freshmen Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) and Sydney Blais (Pascoag, R.I.) in clocking a time of 51.12 seconds in the 4x100, good enough to finish third and .12 seconds behind second-place Bridgewater State University. Herrington, Lorenzen, Shugrue and senior Gitara King (Manchester, N.H.) comprised the 4x400 team, which posted an official time of four minutes, 28.20 seconds to slot in at No. 2 behind the Bears.
Junior Laura O'Hanlon (Dedham, Mass.) led six Penmen finishers in the 1500-meter run with a third-place performance in five minutes, 19.48 seconds. Classmate Felicia Dowling (Merrimack, N.H.) was next in for SNHU with a time of 5:38.72, and freshman Ashley Dennis (Coventry, R.I.) was just behind her in 5:43.64. Sophomore Maddie Bardier (Pembroke, N.H.), junior Devanee Ebert (Reading, Mass.) and freshman Rael Gallucci (Wilmington, Mass.) rounded out the Penmen contingent with showings of 6:14.61, 6:18.11 and 7:20.74, respectively.
Southern New Hampshire put three student-athletes in the top-15 of the long jump and a total of five in the top-20. Lorenzen was fifth after launching 14.60 meters before Blais landed with a distance of 4.22 to check in at No. 12. Freshman Maddie Holt (Seabrook, N.H.) followed at No. 15 with a final jump of 4.10 meters, and Herrington tied for No. 16 at 4.08 meters. Bardier stayed in the top-20 at No. 18 with a 3.78-meter finish.
In the 100-meters, Shugrue turned in a team-best 12th-place finish after crossing the line in 13.56 seconds. King was narrowly behind her at No. 13 at 13.60 and Blais traversed the track in 14.23 seconds, while Holt completed the list of SNHU competitors with a time of 15.82.
A trio of Penmen saw action in the 200-meter dash, with King, Shugrue and Holt all taking to the blocks. King topped the group in 28.02 seconds to place 16th-overall. Shugrue was next in at 28.55, and Holt clocked an official time of 31.44 in the final.
Holt's best event of the day came in the triple jump, in which she joined Bardier in earning a top-10 placing. Holt went a distance of nine meters flat to finish ninth, while Bardier was right behind her at No. 10 with a 8.78-meter showing.
Notes:
- Lorenzen added another top-10 finish in the 400-meter dash by cruising into sixth-place with a time of one minute, 1.79 seconds. Sophomore Kaitlin McCauley (Waltham, Mass.) also generated a sixth-place finish, hers in the 5000-meter run, after completing the event in 20:46.28.
- Shugrue and Herrington took part in the hurdles as well. Shugrue ran an even 19 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles before Herrington checked in at No. 3 in the 400-meter hurdles in one minute, 11.79 seconds.
