Senior Sahara Brown (Center Barnstead, N.H.) of the Southern New Hampshire University women's track and field team captured the 2017 Northeast-10 Conference Javelin Championship Saturday, as the Penmen took part in the NE10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Stonehill College. Southern New Hampshire totaled 19 points and is fifth after the first day of competition.
Brown fired the javelin a distance of 44.40 meters (145 feet, 8 inches), to claim her second consecutive Northeast-10 javelin title and earn the Penmen 10 points. Her throw was 3.50 meters (11 feet, 6 inches) past her next closest competitor and marked the second consecutive meet in which she turned in a performance that provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. Junior Ashlee Carper (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) also competed in the javelin throw, and slotted in at No. 13 with a 31.12-meter (102 feet, 1 inch) showing.
The Southern New Hampshire throws contingent racked up an additional five points in the hammer throw, as sophomore Ashley Elder (Bristol, Conn.) set a new personal record en route to a fourth-place finish. Elder hurled the hammer 46.18 meters (151 feet, 6 inches), which shattered her previous personal best of 44.32 meters (145 feet, 5 inches), which was set just one week ago at the same venue during the Stonehill Skyhawk Invite.
Sophomore Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) was the final Penmen to point Saturday, as she garnered four points in the long jump. Lorenzen traveled a distance of 5.41 meters (17 feet, 9 inches), which was a personal record and good enough to check in fifth overall. Freshman Alanna Murphy (Nashua, N.H.) also took part in the event and her 5.10-meter (16 feet, 8.75 inches) showing placed her at No. 11, and was a mere .03 meters (1.25 inches) outside the top-10.
Notes:
- Freshman Jill Dieterich (Commack, N.Y.) raced in the 1500-meter run, and her time of four minutes, 52.59 seconds was fast enough for No. 10 overall. Dieterich also eclipsed her previous PR of 4:54.39.
- Brown's win in the javelin is her sixth-straight win in the event.
- The host Skyhawks currently lead the NE10 Championships with 61 points after seven scored events. Southern Connecticut State University sits second with 54 points, while Assumption College (42) and Adelphi University (30) join the Penmen in the top-five.
