Senior Sahara Brown (Center Barnstead, N.H.) captured the javelin throw for the fourth consecutive meet, and the Southern New Hampshire University women's track and field team set six new personal records at the Sean Collier Invite on Saturday. The meet, which was hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, did not include team scoring.
Brown fired the spear a distance of 42.36 meters (139 feet), which was five meters farther than her next closest competitor. Junior Ashlee Carper (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) turned in a personal best in the javelin after a throw of 31.36 meters (102 feet, 11 inches), which slotted her at No. 10 overall, and freshman Leah Carfagno (Billerica, Mass.) rounded out the Penmen contingent with a 22.18-meter (72 feet, 9 inches) showing.
Sophomore Ashley Elder (Bristol, Conn.) also turned in a strong showing in the throws, as she netted two personal records and a trio of top-10 finishes. Elder was the top Division II finisher in the discus with a personal-best toss of 44.89 meters (147 feet, 3 inches). She was .68 meters behind the event winner, and four meters ahead of the next closest competitor. Elder also registered a new personal benchmark in the hammer throw of 43.05 meters (141 feet, 3 inches), which placed her fifth overall. Elder's final top-10 of the day came in the shot put, as she posted a heave of 10.93 meters (35 feet, 10.5 inches) that was fourth in Division II and No. 10 overall.
Senior Melissa Handy (Durham, Conn.) also posted a personal record and a top-10 finish in the discus throw. Handy's official distance of 33.12 meters (108 feet, 8 inches) put her ninth in the event, and Brown's 31.52-meter (103 feet, 5 inches) outing narrowly missed out on the top-10 at No. 12.
In the shot put, freshman Jalisa Allen (Foxboro, Mass.) was a top-five performer in the Division II ranks with an 8.87-meter (29 feet, 1.75 inches) throw. Junior Yawa Agbenowossi (Manchester, N.H.) turned in a top toss of 7.62 meters (25 feet), which landed her in the top-25.
Sophomore Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) led a contingent of Southern New Hampshire competitors to finish in the top-20 of the long jump. Lorenzen traveled a distance of 5.12 meters (16 feet, 9.75 inches) to come in third overall. Freshman Alanna Murphy (Nashua, N.H.) was next for the Penmen with an official distance of 4.64 meters (15 feet, 2.75 inches) to check in at No. 10, while junior Amber Herrington (Burlington Township, N.J.) was just behind Murphy with a 4.57-meter (15 feet) finish. Sophomore Sydney Blais (Pascoag, R.I.) launched herself 4.53 meters (14 feet, 10.5 inches) and Carper went 4.43 meters (14 feet, 6.5 inches) to finish at No. 15 and No. 19, respectively.
Lorenzen added a top-five finish in the 100-meter dash in 13.14 seconds, which was fifth overall, while Murphy posted two top-five performances. Murphy slotted in third in the triple jump with a 10.83-meter (35 feet, 6.5 inches) showing, and was second in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.61 seconds. Murphy was the top Division II finisher in the hurdles and was .32 seconds outside the top spot. Freshman Natalie Gallagher (Windham, N.H.) also took part in the 100-meter hurdles, and her time of 17.01 seconds was eighth overall and fifth in Division II.
Freshman Madison Brand (Valhalla, N.Y.) generated a personal record in the 400-meter hurdles, and was the third fastest Division II student-athlete with a time of one minute, 10.37 seconds. Gallagher was just outside the top-10 with a 1:18.54 performance, which put her No. 11 overall.
The 200-meter dash featured a pair of Penmen in the top-10. Herrington was the top SNHU finisher in 27.62 seconds, which was fifth in Division II and eighth overall. Blais also posted a top-10 time in 27.82, which was No. 10 overall.
The SNHU relay teams completed their respective races in the top-five overall and top-two of Division II. The 4x400-meter relay team was first in Division II and second overall in four minutes, 24.10 seconds. The 4x100-meter relay team slid in fourth and second in DII in 50.61 seconds.
Both the 800-meter run and the 1500-meter run featured personal records. In the 800-meter run, Carper set a new personal best in two minutes, 58.66 seconds. Freshman Jill Dieterich (Commack, N.Y.) completed the race in 2:31.66, which was top-10 in Division II. Dieterich turned in that performance despite stumbling in the final 25 meters. In the 1500-meter run, sophomore Ashley Dennis (Coventry, R.I.) generated a PR of five minutes, 17.80 seconds. She was just behind junior Maddie Bardier (Pembroke, N.H.), who clocked an official time of 5:16.22.
Notes:
- Freshman Megan Eugene (Everett, Mass.) competed in the 400-meter run, and she set a new personal best in 1:06.96.
- The meet consisted of 26 institutions from NCAA Divisions I, II and III.
What's Next:
The Penmen are idle until Thursday (April 27) when they take part in the historic Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania.
