Alanna Murphy Captures NE10 Triple Jump Title; Women's Track Finishes Seventh Overall

Freshman Alanna Murphy (Nashua, N.H.) of the Southern New Hampshire University women's track and field team won the 2017 Northeast-10 Conference Triple Jump Championship Sunday, as the Penmen finished seventh overall at the NE10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of Stonehill College. The Penmen compiled 55 points over the course of two days.

Murphy propelled herself a distance of 11.87 meters (38 feet, 11.5 inches) to finish atop the standings and earn 10 points for Southern New Hampshire, while setting a new personal record in her first NE10 Outdoor Championship. She outdistanced the second-place finisher by .19 meters (7.5 inches) and was .20 meters (8 inches) ahead of third.

Freshman Jill Couto (Newton Junction, N.H.) picked up six points for the Penmen after setting a new personal best in the 800-meter run, while sophomore Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) added four in the 400-meter dash with a personal record of her own. Couto traversed the track in two minutes, 16.80 seconds to finish third overall, which shattered her previous PR of 2:21.10. Lorenzen cruised to a fifth-place finish in 57.61 seconds, besting her previous fastest time of 59.45 seconds.

In the relays, Southern New Hampshire earned four total points and set a pair of program records. The 4x100-meter relay team of senior Skyler Shugrue (Worcester, Mass.), graduate student Gitara King (Manchester, N.H.), sophomore Sydney Blais (Pascoag, R.I.) and Lorenzen completed the race in 49.42 seconds, which was the seventh-fastest time and earned two points. The 4x400-meter squad of junior Amber Herrington (Burlington Township, N.J.), Lorenzen, Couto and Blais navigated the race in 4:01.42, duplicating the seventh-place showing of the 4x100-meter team and earning two points.

Murphy turned in personal best in the 100-meter hurdles and fellow freshman, Natalie Gallagher (Windham, N.H.) generated a new PR in the 400-meter hurdles. Murphy tallied a point in the 100 hurdles after clocking an official time of 15.11 seconds to slot in eighth, while Gallagher's time of one minute, 10.61 seconds was 12th. Murphy topped her previous benchmark by .27 seconds and Gallaher's time was 1.42 seconds quicker.

The Penmen throws grabbed seven points and posted two personal records in the process. The discus saw sophomore Ashley Elder (Bristol, Conn.) earn five points after a 38.49-meter (126 feet, 3 inches) toss that was good enough for fourth overall. Senior Sahara Brown (Center Barnstead, N.H.) added two points after a personal-best throw of 36.69 meters (120 feet, 4 inches), which was No. 7 in Sunday's final. Elder set a new PR in the shot put in the shot put after a heave of 12.30 meters (40 feet, 4.25 inches). Elder finished ninth in the event and outdistanced her previous personal record of 11.89 meters (39 feet, .25 inches).

Senior Laura O'Hanlon (Dedham, Mass.) was the final Southern New Hampshire student-athlete to point on Sunday. O'Hanlon crossed the finish line of the 5000-meter run in 17 minutes, 50.27 seconds to check in at No. 5 and earn four points. Sophomore Ashley Dennis (Coventry, R.I.) also took part in the event, and completed the race in 19:53.68 

Notes:
- The host Skyhawks won the team title with a combined score of 169.50 points. Southern Connecticut State University was second with 145 points, and Assumption College (110), Adelphi University (87) and Merrimack College (86) rounded out the top-five.
- Herrington and classmate Ashlee Carper (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) also competed in the heptathlon. Herrington set a new PR with 3,731 points, which was ninth overall and 478 points better than her previous personal best. Carper totaled 3,426 points to slide in at No. 12.
- Murphy topped her previous personal record of 11.48 meters (38 feet, 3.5 inches) by .39 meters (8 inches).
- The 4x400-meter relay team topped its previous best of 4:06.58 by 5.16 seconds.
- Brown's discus performance bested her previous PR of 35.61 meters (116 feet, 10 inches).

Southern New Hampshire continues its schedule Friday (May 12) at the New England Championships, which are hosted by Williams College.
